Dear Literacy Leader,

Thank you for registering for NZCER’s ALL STAR Reading and OTJ data collection. In this email we will:

- Request student information from you to set up your ALL website and ensure you receive the necessary STAR Reading materials to begin

- Provide information about which STAR test to choose for which student

- Provide details of key dates for data collection.

Data Collection

We will be collecting:

- OTJs for students for the end of 2015 and end of 2016

- STAR results before and after your ALL Reading intervention.

Numbers of students

If it is your school’s first year of participation in the ALL intervention you will submit data for each student  involved (6-8 students).

If it is your school’s second year of participation in the ALL intervention you will submit the data from 2-5 teachers (select 3 students at random from each teacher’s ALL group).

If it is your school’s third year of participation in the ALL intervention you will submit the data from 6 or more teachers (select 3 students at random from each teacher’s ALL group).

Please note:

Include the NSN numbers of all students involved.

The following explains what information NZCER requires from your school to set up your ALL site and ensure the process goes smoothly.

School and Student Details Spreadsheet

Making sure the details on this Spreadsheet are correct is important for accurate data analysis. The demographic data will be in your SMS and will be easily transferred.

Choosing the appropriate STAR test at each time point is crucial to measure both the position and progress outcomes of your students. STAR is designed carefully to reflect average progress through the curriculum. As students you have selected to be involved in ALL are making less than average progress, you will need to choose appropriate tests that are at their ability level, not their year level. It is important that the initial testing process makes them feel confident in what they do know.

Beginning of Intervention Test

Please choose the ‘best’ pre-intervention test based on 2015 OTJ for each student. NZCER has assigned a test for each student’s pre-intervention position (see Table below).

Use the year level they were positioned at in the end of 2015 OTJ to choose a test.  If a student is working at curriculum Level 1, please get them to do Test 3-4A.

NZCER will provide you with the appropriate materials to use for both before and after the ALL reading intervention using the information you provide in the Spreadsheet.

As the literacy leader it is your responsibility to ensure your school has submitted the correct data by set dates. You will be supported by your SIT and mentors in this process.
